“Peace bookstores” launched by OD Plus

On 22 April, coinciding with Earth Day, a series of cultural initiatives across Italy highlighted the role of books and bookstores in promoting peace and civic engagement.

As reported by ODplus, the so-called “peace bookstores” formed part of a broader programme of events dedicated to nonviolence, sustainability and active citizenship. The initiative places independent bookstores at the centre of public life, framing them not only as commercial spaces but also as hubs for dialogue and community building.

Across several towns and cities, bookstores and literary festivals hosted talks, presentations and public discussions focused on conflict, solidarity and environmental responsibility. Organisers emphasised the importance of creating open spaces where readers, writers and citizens can engage with social and political issues through literature.

The initiative is part of a wider European network of peace-oriented book festivals and cultural projects, which aim to strengthen independent publishing and encourage grassroots participation in cultural life.
