Pilot shares tips to boost children’s working memory ahead of the new school year

With the summer holidays drawing to a close and children preparing to head back to school, Pilot has shared some simple tips for parents looking to help strengthen their children’s working memory – particularly useful for those inevitable “mind blank” moments when learning gets tricky.
Working memory allows children to temporarily retain and use information, helping with everything from understanding texts and solving problems to mental arithmetic, writing and concentration.
Pilot suggests making memory practice fun by incorporating games such as puzzles, riddles, card games and strategy games into everyday life. Parents can also encourage children to remember shopping lists, recipe steps or daily routines, helping to build memory skills without making it feel like extra homework.
For children struggling to remember letters, Pilot recommends using pictures and visual associations, alongside repetition, alphabet songs and letter games.
Physical activity can also play a role, with games such as hide and seek and strategy-based sports encouraging children to remember rules, positions and locations.
Finally, Pilot highlights the importance of good sleep and a balanced diet, helping children feel rested and ready to learn when they return to the classroom.
