Pentel marks 80 years of innovation

Japanese stationery manufacturer Pentel is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2026, highlighting a legacy of product innovation that has helped shape the global writing and creative materials market.

Founded in Tokyo in 1946 by Yukio Horie, the company began as a supplier of stationery products before expanding into the development and manufacture of art materials. Over the following decades, Pentel established itself as one of the industry’s most recognised brands, introducing a series of products that would become staples in schools, offices and creative environments around the world.

Among its most notable achievements were the launch of the world’s first push-button mechanical pencil in 1960 and the introduction of the Sign Pen in 1963, a product that helped raise Pentel’s international profile and remains one of the company’s best-known writing instruments. Other landmark products include the N50 permanent marker, the Ball Pentel rollerball and the long-running P200 mechanical pencil series.

The anniversary celebrations coincide with a period of corporate change. Pentel’s parent company has begun operating under the name ASTRUM CORPORATION as part of a wider integration strategy that is expected to continue through 2028. Despite the corporate rebranding, the Pentel brand will remain in place globally and continue to be used across the company’s product portfolio.

Pentel says its focus remains firmly on developing writing instruments and creative products that encourage self-expression while maintaining the quality and reliability for which the brand has become known. As the company enters its ninth decade, it plans to showcase new products alongside established favourites at industry events throughout the anniversary year.
