Sustainability in Business Supplies: A Category Update From OPI

In this fantastic article by David Holes at OPI, he examines how sustainability has become a cornerstone of strategy for manufacturers in the business supplies industry, particularly in Europe. Companies are now incorporating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into their operations to meet growing consumer demand for responsible products and comply with stricter regulations. From transitioning to renewable energy to designing eco-friendly products, businesses are showcasing innovation and commitment to reducing their environmental impact.

For example, ACCO Brands EMEA is focused on achieving zero emissions from electricity across its facilities by 2025. The company has already exceeded its goals by reducing overall electricity consumption and implementing solar parks in Germany. Similarly, BIC has embraced eco-design in its product development, creating initiatives like a redesigned BIC 4 Colours pen that reduces plastic use while maintaining functionality. The company also aims for all factories to be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2025.

Other companies, such as Bi-silque, are leading the charge with certifications like Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C) and Ecolabel. Their focus on biocomposites, local sourcing, and waste-to-energy initiatives exemplifies their holistic approach to sustainability. Fellowes Brands has integrated circular economy principles by prioritizing recyclable materials, reducing reliance on virgin resources, and designing products for longevity.

Sustainability efforts extend beyond environmental goals. Double A supports local farmers by using fast-growing ‘paper trees’ instead of natural forests, while BIC and Pilot are investing in education initiatives, improving conditions for millions of children worldwide. Companies like ExaClair and SC Johnson Professional are also finding ways to reduce waste by reimagining production processes and forming partnerships with charitable organizations to repurpose excess materials.

Innovation in manufacturing has also played a vital role. Ninestar’s automated lines increase efficiency while reducing water usage, and Bong’s European supply chain lowers emissions associated with transportation. Domtar has adopted advanced pollution control technologies and waste recycling programs to reduce its environmental footprint while maintaining product quality.

These initiatives highlight the industry’s commitment to balancing sustainability with cost-efficiency and product excellence. As manufacturers set ambitious goals and pursue certifications, they demonstrate that meaningful environmental and social progress is achievable without compromising business objectives.
