A new report from 3M has revealed a major confidence gap among UK homeowners and renters when it comes to DIY projects, pointing to significant opportunities for retailers and brands.
The study, The consumer DIY trends shaping retail opportunities, surveyed more than 2,000 people and found that while many aspire to tackle home improvements, a lack of confidence, knowledge and access to the right tools often holds them back.
Over a quarter of respondents admitted to damaging walls or surfaces because they used the wrong equipment, and more than a third said they have never been shown how to complete basic DIY tasks. One in five consumers also reported being unsure where to find the right materials. Notably, men expressed higher confidence levels than women across most project types, while age influenced which tasks different groups preferred to take on.
3M said these gaps represent a major retail opportunity for brands that can simplify the DIY process, offer clear guidance and build customer confidence. The company urges retailers to provide practical advice, instructional content and tailored product bundles to help consumers feel capable of completing projects correctly the first time – unlocking untapped demand in the home improvement market.
